Protonmail Rant

2025-01-21, 09:42:26

The way the proton-mail-export-cli does its job is almost malicious.

Who wouldn't want a folder with almost 100k files where half are .eml email-files and half are the metadata as json.

09:44:50

No folders, no tags, no nothing.

One could probably figure out that information by parsing the metadata.
But everything in there is either also part of the .eml file or a UUID without any reference to what it means whatsoever.

Threre's some stuff that *looks* like base64 but isn't as well.

09:47:02

So plan B it is:
Download everything using the bridge and then letting thunderbird export it folder-by-folder so I can import it into tuta.

The Tags were set automatically anyway, so I can just do that again after the fact (hopefully)

09:50:03

Oh, yeah I should've started the thread with this info maybe:

The ProtonMail CEO is a weak man who can't apologize after saying something stupid and abusing a company-account to double down on it.

A "clarification" isn't the same as an apology, even less so when it's only posted on Reddit.

09:52:00

And since Tuta finally added their long-awaited import feature in December, I decided to jump ship.

There were a couple of things PM did that I didn't like, but this was the straw that broke the camel's back.

09:54:32

On the Tuta-side everything is set up and ready to import.
The only hiccup I had was that they apparently can automatically set tags on incoming emails (or maybe I just can't find the setting for it)

While this would be nice to have, It's not a dealbreaker by any means.

10:03:30

The big step back IMO is that they don't do PGP at all.

I get the encryption part, because PGP mail encryption is shit.
But it would be nice If I could sign my emails.

10:06:13

But that's a low price to pay to not be reliant on a company whose CEO thinks Trump fights against big tech and cares about the small guy.

I've been talking with Proton support in two different tickets:
The one where I asked if there's a refund at all and the one where I asked to get that refund. (I assumed they'd close No1)

Today I got my favorite response so far:
> I [...] hope that we will get the chance to rectify this.

07:21:26

Crazy that there wasn't a single point in the whole line of fuckups where they had a chance to fix the situation.

07:21:59

I guess that's just destiny (or whatever else some people claim to believe in so they can evade the consequences for their actions)

08:09:52

The refund request went through.

A screenshot from the bottom of the ProtonMail interface.
It says that I'm currently using 2.17GB of 1.00GB.
