One persons trash is another persons treasure

I bought some things at auction.

A weird looking cart filled with various Computer stuff. Amongst other things two silicon graphics workstations, a turquoise apple monitor, a IBM thinkpad and a bunch of cables.

One of the things I got was a Sony Mavica.
You know, the one seen on LGR.

I figured I need a quick win after driving for 10 Hours to pick all that tech up today and chose that one for that goal.

19:17:36

It seems to be in good shape, but somewhat loved.
Has some minor scratches on the surface, some slightly bigger ones on the bottom, and fingerprints on any surface that shows them.

19:42:12

And of course the obligatory scratched-in asset tag.

The bottom of a sony mavica camera with a number scratched into the bottom between a sticker with infos about the device and the battery cover.

But considering I paid 41€ for a box with various cameras that also contained this one, I'm happy.

Picture of the sony mavica from the front.
It's a rather bulky looking device for today's standards. Width and height are a bit bigger than a 3,5" floppy disk. But it's as thick as a modern DSLR. There's a shutter button on the top right and a zoom-lever right below. towards the right of the button is a built-in flash with a colorful sticker advertising the 2.5 hour or 1600 shot battery runtime. It also talsk about Memory Stick compatibility with an optional floppy disk adaptor. Right to the sticker and the flash protrudes the lens with the lens-cap on. Obove the flash is the sony-logo. Above that ontop of the camera is another sticker which isn't legible in the photo. the camera has a gray and blue strap.

But I didn't really have a quick win.
My multimeter measures the battery as completely flat and I don't have a charging cable.
I already ordered a new battery and an external charger, because It's likely toast.
And I'll have to sort through the boxes of cables tomorrow, hoping to find the OEM charger for the camera itself.

19:44:34

The camera also had a floppy disk still in it.

When trying to look if there's anything on there, I found out that my only working floppy drive isn't working anymore.
So I bought a replacement for that one as well.

19:44:46

I really hope I find that charger tomorrow, if I don't, I'll have to wait till Wednesday for the new battery and charger to arrive.

2024-11-23, 11:28:45

I'm currently sorting trough all the cables. The most modern one I found by now is a VGA to DVI Cable. <3

I feel bad for whoever won most of the Apple-stuff. I ended up with all their Power Supplies.

11:34:41

And my whole workshop smells like a leaking battery because I disturbed a canon-thingy I can't identify.

A Canon NB-300 battery. Next to a thing that probably connects to the back or side of another device. It has a slot for the battery and there's a barrel jack standing out from the side. There's also a wheel with a threaded rod sticking out. That's presumably to mount it on the device. It claims to be either a 7DB or a K30083 according to the label in the battery bay.

11:52:32

Update: I found one cable that's more modern than the DVI: A USB 2.0 Extension cable.

11:56:41

But as I feared: No Mavica Power Supply.

12:12:25

Time for the next Potential Easy win: A Sony Sports Walkman.

A Sports Walkman by Sony. It is a bit bigger than other Walkmans. The Left two thirds are a vibrant yellow and contain a gray area in the middle with a AM FM tuner and a tiny window to see if a casette is in there. The remaining third has the same gray as the tuner. On the gray part it says Walkman AVLS in a small light-grey font and SPORTS in big orange letters under it. The yellow part also has the iconic sony logo towards one of the edges.

12:14:03

I fear that I'm jinxing it by calling stuff easy wins.

But we start of good: There are no batts in it and the terminals are clean.

Let's put some AAs in to find out how bad the belt is.

12:19:17

Let's test the radio first. That way the belt stays working for a while in my mind.

12:19:32

The Power LED comes on.

12:21:03

And FM Radio works perfectly fine.
The tuner dial is a bit stiff, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's intended.

The Audio dial is spot-on no crackling no nothing.

12:25:20

The reception inside the house is a bit crap.
I can't really move away from the Window.

12:36:54

I can't test AM right now.

Mostly all AM Broadcasts in Germany ceased to exist in the early-mid 2010s.

Now there's only a single University-ran Tower in Erlangen and a handfull of others strewn across Europe.
Luckily Wikipedia has a List with them in the German-Langue article:
de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mittelwe

12:39:34

I basically have to wait until the sun goes down for Skywave to take effect. Then I should be able to test the AM radio.

Exciting!

12:42:55

Now for the thing I'm dreading.

Testing the tape player

12:46:09

The playback controls work. They're as satisfying clunky as they should be.

The Supply Reel rotates just fine. FF and REW also seem good.

Dry-run succeeded.

Now let's put a tape in it.

12:50:07

And it just works.
Don't know about wow and flutter because I don't have a way to test that.

Is it weird to be a bit disappointed?

17:40:59

I guess I was too quick with that diagnosis.

I listened to an audiobook and that was fine.
Listening to music on it is a chore.

The playback speed is neither right nor constant.
New belt it is then.

20:04:33

Back to trying out AM again.

I can hear two stations that are probably in Romania, based on the frequency.
It's with a lot of atmospheric noise.

20:11:38

And yea, that's it in terms of AM.

Going outside would probably make it better. But it's cold and dark there.

2024-11-27, 13:30:56

I got the replacement battery for the Mavica in and a new floppy drive.

The new battery is extremely snug, and I had to (very carefully) use a flat head screwdriver to pry it back out again.

I wrapped some kapton tape around it now to use as a pull tab.

13:33:27

The floppy had pictures on them, of course.

They look like they've been taken in the make-up room on a TV set. (Or that's what I assume because I got the camera from a TV Studio)

All the pictures have people on them, so I won't post them here.

13:43:57

Falls jemand 2004 beim gearbeitet, und dort mit einer Sony Mavica Fotos von Frisuren, Makeup und Kolleg*innen gemacht hat: brauchst du die Fotos noch?
